Originally composed for piano, this movement from Isaac Albeniz's Suite Espanola is best known in its version for guitar. However, while the precise flamenco rhythms and introspective lento sections are illustrative of the guitar's character and heritage, when played by solo violin, the leyenda emanates an exuberance and pride which voices the dignity and elegance of the Spanish people.

This arrangement engages the emotional immediacy of the violin, the restless passages of string-crossing and arpeggiando demonstrating the sophistication of the instrument while also conveying a bravura passion. Neither histrionic nor sentimental, the music speaks eloquently and with panache - saltando becomes the chatter of a flamenco heel; each sweeping upbow the swish of a skirt.

In contrast, the central lento section of the piece is haunting and reflective; fragile harmonics and strummed pizzicati punctuate rich double-stopped phrases, emulating the songs of the cante flamenco tradition.

The exceptional palette of musical colours in the leyenda offers a unique insight into the violin's capabilities, and the shifts between intoxicating drive and serenity create a powerful emotional draw.
