Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) was a prolific Italian composer who is best know today for his operas. "Lucia di Lammermoor" and "Anna Bolena" in Italian, as well as "Daughter of the Regiment" in French, are notable examples that demonstrate his versatility. Donizetti composed in a style that showcased not only Italian lyricism, but also, humor, largely due to the influence of Rossini - his contemporary - whose operas were enormously successful after 1810.
This sonata (originally for Flute) lends itself well to the violin, which has a wider octave range for tonal variety, as well as the ability to perform double stops.
